Pope Paul VI’s statement on this makes it clear: The Church knows this… Evangelization is in fact, the grace and vocation proper to the Church. She exists to evangelize (Ev. Nun. 14).
The Church’s universal mission is born from the command of Jesus Christ and is fulfilled in the course of the centuries in the proclamation of the mystery of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Son, as saving event for all humanity. (Declaration Dominus Jesus I)
The mission of the Church is “to proclaim and establish among all peoples the kingdom of Christ and of God, and she is, on earth, the seed and beginning of that kingdom. While she slowly grows to maturity, the Church longs for the completed kingdom and with all her strength, hopes and desires to be united in glory with her king”. (Decl. Dom. Jesus 18).
All men and women are invited to God’s Kingdom and so the Gospel has to be spread to the whole world through the Church’s evangelizing mission. The Church has received from the Divine Master the command to spread the Good News to the ends of the earth (Mt. 28:18 – 20; Acts 1:8). The Church as the sign and instrument of intimate union with God and of the unity of the entire human race; and the sign and instrument of God’s kingdom which she is called to announce and to establish is called to evangelize. “By her proclamation of the Gospel, she draws her hearers to receive and profess the faith, she prepares them for baptism, snatches them from the slavery of error, and she incorporates them into Christ so that in love for him, they grow to full maturity.” (Decl. Dominus Jesus No. 1)
